While your architect or design/build firm will do all the research for you to ensure city codes & requirements are met, this information will help you better understand what will and won't be possible to do on your land. Each town has different regulations on what you can and cannot build, how close your home can be to the property line, how many trees can be removed, where city infrastructure (water lines, power grid, sewer, internet) runs, etc. If you're planning on building inside city limits, it's important that you do your research on city codes. The Lord gave us so much peace over the property and we immediately knew it was the place to build our home. We initially hated it, but after months of driving around and constantly checking listings, we came back to this property and fell in love with it. The land that we built on was actually the first piece of land we came across when we began driving around Argyle, searching for land. This is critical if you don't already own the land you'll be building on. We chose to work with HGTV stars, The Hayhurst Brothers, who are a design/build firm because we liked the idea of having one point of contact, but also knew that it would be important to have someone who was intimately familiar with the construction process. A design/build firm will have designers that work within their company, as well as a team of builders who have years of experience constructing custom homes. Do you want to work with one person throughout the entire process or do you want different people leading the design and construction of your home? Architects are great at designing beautiful homes, but they are not always as well-versed in the construction process. This was a very big decision for us and it will be for you as well. Familiarize yourself with local construction costs in your area and build a realistic budget based on low, mid, and high end builds. This is such an important step in the process because it will help you determine what type of home you can build.
